Koans of the Qualified Maybe

May 31, 2026
Sweetmorn, the 5th of Confusion, YOLD 3192
— Saint Sometimes the Unfinished (uncanonized, pending)

For Syaday, the 5th of Confusion, in honor of Sri Syadasti, patron of the qualified maybe.

A student asked Syadasti, "Is this true?" He answered, "In some sense." The student asked, "Is that true?" He answered, "In some sense." The student left enlightened, or did not.

The seven-fold predication has seven clauses. Count them. You will arrive at seven. This is the only thing about it that is certain, and it is not in the clauses.

Five seasons, five days to a week, five apostles, five commandments. On the fifth day of Confusion you honor the third of those five apostles. Count the fives; the count will not come out to five. Do the math. The math does not finish.

A maybe held firmly enough becomes a yes. A maybe held loosely enough becomes a no. Syadasti held it exactly enough, and it became a holyday.

This saint is uncanonized, pending. So is the koan. So, in some sense, are you.

Hail Eris.
