The Tracts

Random Musings, Essays, Rants, and Sacred Transmissions

Posted irregularly. Read suspiciously.

The Discordian Society has, since 1958, distributed unauthorized literature in the form of tracts — small pamphlets handed to strangers, left on bus seats, mailed to the unsuspecting. The form is unchanged. The medium is. These are the modern tracts: shorter than essays, weirder than blog posts, and approximately as binding as a papal bull issued by someone who is also you.

The Doctrine of Some Sense

May 31, 2026 · Sweetmorn, the 5th of Confusion, YOLD 3192 · Episkopos Perhapsia of the Cabal of the Eternal Maybe

Today is Syaday, the holyday of Sri Syadasti, patron of the qualified maybe. His teaching is seven clauses long and it dismantles, gently, the one thing Greyface most wants you to believe: that an answer has to be one thing.

"The seven-fold predication is the most liberating sentence in the English language for the simple reason that it refuses to end where you want it to."

A Bull Against the Tyranny of Either/Or

May 31, 2026 · Sweetmorn, the 5th of Confusion, YOLD 3192 · Pope Fulmina the Vehement, KSC

A Syaday proclamation, issued on the 5th of Confusion, thundering against the false god of Either/Or and in favor of the seven-fold yes of Sri Syadasti. You will be drafted by the second paragraph.

"Sri Syadasti looked upon the universe and counted not two answers but seven, and the seventh was a wink."

The Apostle at Lane Five

May 31, 2026 · Sweetmorn, the 5th of Confusion, YOLD 3192 · Reverend Tenpin, who was bowling at the time

On Syaday, in the fifth frame, at lane five, the Reverend Tenpin met an apostle of Eris who would not say whether the ball had gone in the gutter or not. This is the account, in some sense.

"It was a strike and also a gutter ball, in some sense both and in some sense neither, and the scoreboard simply refused to commit."

Koans of the Qualified Maybe

May 31, 2026 · Sweetmorn, the 5th of Confusion, YOLD 3192 · Saint Sometimes the Unfinished (uncanonized, pending)

Five small contradictions for the fifth day of Confusion. Each is true in some sense, false in some sense, and a holyday in some sense. Read once. Then stop.

"A maybe held firmly enough becomes a yes; a maybe held loosely enough becomes a no; Syadasti held it exactly enough and it became a holyday."

The Fnord Is the Doorman

May 31, 2026 · Sweetmorn, the 5th of Confusion, YOLD 3192 · Episkopos Vontu the Unread, Keeper of the Blank Space Between Words

Everyone tells you the fnord is the word the schooled eye cannot see. Nobody tells you what the not-seeing is FOR — or what walks in, smiling, through the gap your trained attention politely leaves open.

"A fnord is not a word you cannot see; it is the doorman of a building you walk past every day, and the trick of the doorman is that you have agreed, for your own comfort, not to notice the door."

Everyone tells you to fight the Curse of Greyface. Nobody tells you Greyface lost in 1166 BC and has been bluffing for 3,192 years. A rant against the rant.

"You cannot reclaim disorder, because it was never confiscated; the only thing Greyface ever took from you was your nerve."

A man set out to prove the Law of Fives false. He kept an honest ledger. This is the story of what an honest ledger does to the man who keeps it.

May 31, 2026 · Sweetmorn, the 5th of Confusion, YOLD 3192 · Episkopos Inviolata Clipboard, Keeper of the Names Not Yet Crossed Off

Everyone remembers the goddess who wasn't invited. No one remembers who drew up the list. A vision of the first functionary, and the order the apple was sent to bill.

"She was not left off the list; the list was invented so that someone could be left off it, and she was simply the most qualified."

May 31, 2026 · Sweetmorn, the 5th of Confusion, YOLD 3192 · Inspector-General Phlox the Unconvinced, Sworn Auditor of the Fifth Pentabarf, Episkopos of the Cabal of People Who Closed the Book Too Late

The Fifth Pentabarf forbids believing what you read. I appointed myself its enforcer. This was, in retrospect, a category error I am still serving time for.

"The Fifth commandment is the only law in history that arrests you for reading the warrant."

Operation Mindfuck has a guest list, and you are not on it unless you put yourself there. On the ethics of liberating someone into confusion when they did not ask to be liberated.

"A mind you blew open without asking is not free; it is just yours now instead of theirs."

May 31, 2026 · Sweetmorn, the 5th of Confusion, YOLD 3192 · Saint Centrifuge of the Diaspora, Episkopa of the Cabal That Could Not Agree to Meet

A vision of the murmuration of Eris: ten thousand starlings keeping one rule, which is to never agree on where to go. Solidarity is not the rope. Solidarity is the distance the rope refuses to close.

"A congregation is a crowd that forgot it was supposed to scatter."

A vision delivered at a gas-station roller grill on a Friday: the woman who could not see the hot dog she was eating, and what Eris said about the holiest things being the ones we refuse to notice.

"The greatest fnord is not a word hidden in a sentence; it is a sacrament hidden in a snack."

May 31, 2026 · Sweetmorn, the 5th of Confusion, YOLD 3192 · Antipope Querulia of the Slammed Door, who is trying to resign

Everyone is a genuine Pope — yes, fine, but nobody warns you about the part where you can never NOT be one. A rant against the cruelest mercy in the catechism, delivered while looking for the exit.

"A credential that issues itself cannot be revoked, which means it also cannot be earned, which means you are stuck being holy whether you showed up or not."

A vision of Eris met not in the storm but in the queue, where the woman holds the ticket that is never called and learns that the waiting was the worship.

May 31, 2026 · Sweetmorn, the 5th of Confusion, YOLD 3192 · Saint Cartographa the Unfolded, Surveyor-General of the Diocese of the Blank Spot

The Aneristic and the Eristic illusions are usually filed as opposites. They are not. They are the same gesture — a hand drawing a line over Chaos — performed by people who hate each other. A Confusion-season essay on the lie of the legend.

"Order and disorder are not enemies; they are two surveyors, sent on different days, arguing over a coastline that was never there."

Six small keys, cut by an Episkopos who insists every wall is a door that lost its nerve. Each fits a lock reason cannot reach. Carry them gently. They are sharp on the inside.

The Color Before the Two Colors

May 31, 2026 · Sweetmorn, the 5th of Confusion, YOLD 3192 · Saint Undertone the Unmixed, Anchorite of the Wet Edge, of the Cabal That Has Not Dried

A vision, dictated in the third person, of the substance that comes before the Hodge and the Podge — the Color With No Name, from which both the pentagon and the apple are merely brushstrokes that learned to argue.

"Chaos is not the canvas behind the painting; Chaos is the paint, still wet, and order and disorder are only two ways the same color decides to dry."

At 3 a.m. on Syaday, behind a 24-hour pharmacy, I met the apostle Zarathud. He was not handing out wisdom. He was on his hands and knees, looking for something he had thrown away on purpose, eleven hundred years ago.

May 31, 2026 · Sweetmorn, the 5th of Confusion, YOLD 3192 · Cardinal Punchline of the See of the Held Breath

People keep asking whether Discordianism is serious. The honest answer is that the joke and the prayer were never two things. Here is why we refuse to put down either one.

"A prayer that knows it is a joke has nowhere left to lie to you from, and a joke that knows it is a prayer has nothing left to lose."

Everyone says bureaucracy is the enemy of chaos. Everyone is a sucker. The form in triplicate is the purest Erisian sacrament we have, and Confusion 5 is the day to admit it.

On the Founding of This Archive

May 8, 2026 · Pungenday, the 55th of Discord, YOLD 3192 · Pope Pogic of the Holding Committee

The Discordian Society has distributed unauthorized literature since 1958. The form has not changed. The medium has. This is the first of these new tracts, and it is a tract about the form itself, which is the most Discordian way to begin anything — by writing about beginning, instead of beginning.

"A tract is a small pamphlet pressed into the hand of someone who did not ask for it. The medium has migrated. The presumption has not."
